Maritime industries virtual enterprise linkage

Objective

To assure best exploitation of IT developments for the benefit of the industry and the environment it is imperative to identify and harmonise basic requirements of wide user groups. The co-ordination and harmonisation of user requirements finds an easy test-bed in maritime industries, as they have natural experience in horizontal and cross-sectoral approaches. MARVEL OUS's objective is to identify and harmonise generic requirements for use of advanced IT in manufacturing and engineering across the maritime industry building up links with other sectors for mutual benefit. The project will guarantee consensus on requirements across the whole range of maritime users and work closely with the technology providers. It will also ensure that the end-user requirements are feasible and can be translated into product development.

This project will develop detailed specifications of IT user requirements and will start the prototyping effort that will ultimately test and demonstrate the concepts. The effort will be continued in separate projects, co-ordinated by MARVEL OUS.

MARVEL OUS is an end-user driven project. The impetus behind the development comes from the end-users of the system: Euroyards a consortium of five major European Shipyards (Astilleros Españoles, Vulkan Schiffbau-Verbund GmbH, Chantiers de l'Atlantique, FINCANTIERI, Howaldtswerke - Deutsche Werft AG) and Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd. are representing the European Marine Industry. MARVEL OUS will be strengthened by the participation of the classification societies Lloyd's Register of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd and Research Institutes such as, BMT and BIBA. MARVEL OUS will install open IT and Vendor Groups to guarantee the transition of the user requirements to the IT products and further User Groups and Interest Groups to assure industry specific and thus relevant solutions.

This project will
- define process chains for design, manufacturing, logistics and survey
- identify suitable information and communication technology to support these chains
- install accompanying measures to shorten product development and improve logistics
- promote application concepts through pilot installation of state of the art technology
- identify gaps in current applications
- assure complementary coverage of the entire life cycle
