A Safe Way to School on Foot and Bike - Traffic and Children in Europe

Objective

The aim of the project 'A Safe Way to School on Foot and Bike - Traffic and Children' is to create multimedia teaching materials based on graphics, pictures, movies, sounds and texts. The goal by using multimedia instruction materials is to improve lessons in road safety drills seen in a European perspective.

The project is divided into two modules:

The first module is for standard IBM compatible SVGA computers. Colour pictures from real life traffic situations are displayed on the screen. The pupil must react to a variety of situations choosing the safest way through the traffic. The material allows pupils to obtain knowledge about traffic regulations which are necessary when on foot or bike. The user can choose to work with the traffic in cities, towns, or in rural areas of European countries.

The second module is based on the same idea, looking for a bridged format used on both CD-ROM/XA and CD-I. These media have been chosen to ensure the possibility of using interactivity with living pictures in order to illustrate the complicated reality of traffic more convincingly. The user must react to various traffic situations. The reactions will always implicate a new scene, which has to be reacted upon. This brings the exercise close to reality, but without the risk of live traffic. Through the 'live' situation the user will have the possibility of seeing different traffic scenarios from various points of view and thus improve their ability to understand and react appropriately according to the actions of other road users. Later on these skills may prevent accidents and even save lives.

Programme(s)
