Training in multi-scale approaches to understanding carbon dynamics in Arctic and upland systems

Objective

MULTIARC will provide high quality research training to a team of six postgraduate researchers enabling them to develop their research skills through an integrated programme of formal research training and practical research experience. Training will be provided within the theme of carbon dynamics in Arctic and upland systems with the overall aims being to understand the plant and soil driven processes that define carbon dynamics at the plot and ecosystem scale and to understand how these processes scale up and drive catchment-scale carbon dynamics. MULTIARC will use a transitional gradient of sites from glacial to non-glacial conditions, which will include gradients of low to high carbon storage and predominantly inorganic to predominantly organic carbon transfers.

The training objectives of this programme are therefore to:
(a) quantify carbon fluxes in catchments representing different stages of development from systems of low carbon storage to those with significant carbon pools;
(b) compare these carbon dynamics along multiple transitions (glacial - non-glacial / alpine - sub-alpine / sub-Arctic' upland);
(c) understand how "up-stream" components of carbon cycling (e.g. plant traits, microbial functioning, soil processes) drive downstream changes in t he organic and inorganic carbon dynamics of catchments;
(d) provide a much needed understanding of their sensitivity to future environmental perturbations.

To achieve this, six EST fellows will work within 5 work-packages (WPs) that cover a broad spectrum of scales and incorporate the major processes and drivers of system carbon dynamics. WPs 1 to 4 will focus on particular components of carbon cycling (plant carbon balance, decomposition processes, soil water fluxes and freshwater fluxes), while integration across scales will be driven by modelling within WP5.
