Objective
As the dimension and criticality of the applications increases, it becomes more and more difficult to estimate costs, track projects and to have full control of the source code, especially when it is developed by subcontractors. Moreover, banking and financial markets are demanding for higher quality systems, as far as availability and reliability of the service is concerned. The experiment has two main objectives: the extension of the software development process, to also cover the maintenance phase and the new releases, through the establishment of a product life cycle supported by advanced configuration management practices, and the measurement of the obtained improvement on the reliability and availability of the offered inter bank services.
THE EXPERIMENT
The objectives will be achieved through the following steps:
a) definition of the configuration management process
b) selection of a configuration management tool
c) implementation and optimisation of the aforementioned process
d) measurement of the effectiveness of the configuration management policies and tools by means of a measurement programme based on the GQM (Goal Question Metrics) technique.
The experiment will be performed on a very large project, called NRO, centred on the design, development and deployment of the new generation of a communication and network management software. This software is supported on a variety of platforms and operating environments that range from mainframes to UNIX minis. NRO is developed by SIA, a small-to-medium enterprise which employs 240 people, 40 of them involved in NRO teams together with 2 major subcontractors.
EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE
Maintenance and evolution processes are expected to be shortened in order to enhance the availability and the quality of products and services. A permanent infrastructure will be introduced to evaluate, from a quantitative viewpoint, the impact of the innovation on the baseline and future projects. Top management will be supported in decision making activities, both concerning daily operations and longer-term strategic decisions, by actual measures; a comparison of costs and benefits, for different organisations, will also be possible. The experience is now restricted to the Network Division only, but will progressively be transferred to the whole company.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
