Chaotic nanometric devices: bifurcations, scars and quatizations

Objective

The goal of this project is to develop a semi-classical theory for quantum fluctuation statistics in open (i.e. scattering) systems that classically exhibit soft chaos; that is, for systems in which both regular and chaotic initial conditions coexist. In such systems a competition between the generic orbit bifurcations is believed to determine the long-range spectral correlations and wave-function correlations in the semi-classical (short wave-length) limit, and so to determine fluctuations in the transport properties (e.g. electron current). Open quantum systems are becoming increasingly accessible to controlled experiments, in the form of quantum dots, micro-lasers and microwave cavities for example. Previous theoretical approaches have been based on the unrealistic assumptions of complete chaos or integrability. A semi-classical description of conductance fluctuations which respects the fact that almost all systems exhibit soft chaos and so show bifurcation-dominated strong fluctuations is therefore expected to have a very significant impact on the field of nano-electronics.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
