SMOG has developed a miniaturized air quality monitoring station using a novel system architecture for use in urban environments. It is capable of detecting a range of important air pollutant species (CO, NO2, O3 and Benzene), produced by road traffic.
The heart of the SMOG demonstrator is an array of miniaturized silicon-integrated metal-oxide gas sensors that allows a drastic reduction in the volume and power consumption of the monitoring station. Selective detection of the individual target gases against interfering gases is enabled by state-of-the-art pattern recognition techniques. To reduce dead volumes, the development of a miniaturized actuator system is an important goal of the project. The new miniature gas chromatographic unit represents a starting point for a future generation of instruments. There are two main business areas for SMOG which are (1) pollution detection by direct sale of the complete instrument, and (2) sale of sensors and substrates.
