Polydentate phosphines and their metal carbonyl cluster complexes- units for super-molecular construction and synthesis of new materials

Objective

The main goal of the project is to extend transition metal cluster construction beyond the cluster core and to obtain connected polymetallic units by a systematic step-by-step procedure. The proposed approach is based on targeted addition of carbonyl cluster molecules to the specially designed multi-dentate phosphines and subsequent coupling of super-molecules into the larger ones using appropriate ligands/subunits.

The project involves the following steps: - synthesis of the family of novel di-, tri- and tetradentate phosphine ligands that possess rigidly arrayed organic backbones, - synthesis of the nanosized super-molecules (length ca. 10nm), constructed of the transition metal clusters (tetra- and octahedral) and the new ligands as linking spacers; in accordance with the architecture of the ligands' backbones three main structural types - chains, layers and 3D - are to be formed upon assembly of the clusters and ligands, - synthesis of the hybrid super-molecules that posses both metal cluster cores and mononuclear metal centre(s) in higher oxidation states, these molecules could serve as blocks for formation of conductive structures consisting of redox-active metal centres, - detailed structural and spectroscopic (NMR, IR, UV-vis, luminescence, fluorescence, ESI-mass) studies of the new compounds.

These new compounds are expected to have unusual physical and chemical properties and be important both to academic science and certain practical applications, mainly to nanoscale architecture, optical or electroluminescence device development.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
