Objective
The BIJO-DATA Informationssysteme GmbH is a small, well experienced multimedia production company which designs and develops all kinds of multimedia applications.
Facing the challenge of market expansion and increased quality of the software, the objective of our Application Experiment is to redesign a set of small library elements of our own authoring and modelling software. New software development methods will be tested. Object oriented programming, use of standard database engine and integration in 32-bit operating systems are other objectives of the PIE. The PIE is necessary in order to improve software quality and reduce software development in the company.
THE EXPERIMENT
Depending on our baseline project "GABI" we have first to define the main software parts. After picking two parts for redesign we plan to redevelop the selected parts under control of efficiency measure methods. After completion of the redesigned software and after function test we have to compare the new codes with the older one in case of graphics, speed of animation and time of developing. Writing new guidelines for software developing in the company and the know-how of using new commercial tools will be results of that PIE. The baseline-project itself consists of the following parts:
- database engine for standard text data
- database engine for graphical data
- display system
- authoring system with own script language
- own GUI (Graphic User Interface)
- real time animation
- process simulations
- distributing model
In the PIE the GUI with video integration and graphical database and some small parts of the authoring system should be redesigned.
2 - 4 Software Developers will work in this PIE.
EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE
The following results are expected:
- better and more cost-efficient development of standard tools
- quicker and cheaper development of user applications
- better software quality
- easier calculation of future projects for our customers
- better and more efficient use of modern tools and techniques like OLE, ODBC, OOP
- introduction of a version, configuration and testing management system in our company
At the end of this PIE in our company we will have a new developed part of our software library and a lot of knowledge how to develop software like the baseline project in the future. We will have new guidelines for software development in order to develop software more quickly, corresponding with a higher software quality. In addition to the more technical output, we plan to introduce parts of rules of ISO 9000 in future.
