BIOaerosol IDentification WITH optimal coherent control using FemtoSecond LASER pulses

Objective

Detection and identification of bio-aerosols holds of particular importance for public health and defence. Bioterrorism, SARS or legionella epidemics have made urgent the need of a fast system capable of accurately alerting to the presence of biohazards. For this purpose, all-optical techniques offer a fast answer and can operate remotely. Sophisticated fluorescence spectroscopy systems have been developed to identify bio-aerosols and especially to distinguish them from non-bio aerosols (e.g. diesel soot). But a major limitation is the incapacity of UV-Vis fluorescence to discriminate different species with similar spectral signatures. Besides, coherent control is an optical technique that takes advantage of the large spectrum of femtosecond laser pulses to control the dynamics of molecular wave-packets in the excited state potential surface. Prof. Rabitz, at Princeton University (USA), an international leader in this field, showed that closed-loop experiments enable to optimize the temporal shape of the pulse to discriminate between two molecules that have similar spectra.
The aim of this proposal is to apply these powerful techniques to the detection of bio-aerosols and further, to the identification of the pathogen ones, by using their ability to distinguish target molecules in complex environments. The applicant has developed high skills in femtosecond laser spectroscopy of aerosols during his PhD at the University Lyon (France, Prof. Wolf). With a postdoctoral position in Prof. Rabitzas group, he intends to learn optimal coherent control experience schemes and related algorithms.(optimization and extraction of relevant information). During the return phase, the European Research Area and specifically the University Lyon will benefit from the high competences brought by the applicant on coherent control for bio-aerosols identification and bio-molecular environments studies that have also issues for the study of living matter and clinical aspects.
