Radical improvements to efficiency through access to low cost multimedia systems

Objective

- To pilot a low cost, feature rich multimedia client-server network configured so that the system has clear price advantages for the consortium and clear efficiency advantages for users.
- To pilot the multimedia system on the EURO-ISDN network to provide universal access at low cost.
- To implement search and discovery tools drawn from the ESPRIT project INTUITIVE, that improve the precision and recall aspect of multimedia searching; this enables easier and more reliable use of multimedia facilities and reduces training and support costs.
- To implement new presentation tools so that multimedia information is presented to different classes of users in the form most appropriate to their needs; this creates a novel system facility on which to base sales and adds to efficiency savings.
- To conduct extensive evaluations based on efficiency analysis and earned value analysis to demonstrate the techno-economic benefits of the proposed system.

The objectives will be sought through the implementation and integration of stable technologies based on existing and emerging standards in the relevant fields such as H320, T120 and CAP 2.0. The use of Internet standards and protocols will be integrated into pilot client server environments both for the virtual WAN communications as well as intranet working and access to multimedia information services.
