Objectif "Since their discovery, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been the subject of intensive research. Many scientific articles and books have been devoted to their synthesis, properties and applications. CNTs have generated increasing interest due to their exceptio nal properties and have been already applied in field emission technologies, nanoelectronics, hydrogen storage, superstrong fibres, composite materials, catalysts, molecular wires, straws, gears, switches and photonic materials. Moreover, many new applicat ions will be proposed for this new material in the nearest future. Success in any of these as well as in new applications strongly depends on the ability to synthesise sufficient amount of coherent and defect-free nanotubes with controlled properties. The development of such synthesis process in turn requires the knowledge of the mechanisms of CNT nucleation and growth. Nowadays, the cost of 1 g purified single-walled CNTs varies from 400 to 600 $. Such high market price drastically inhibits the developmen t and dissemination of the CNT applications. In order to significantly reduce their cost and provide satisfactory quantity, new methods for the CNT production have to be proposed and developed. The main aims of the project are to create a novel method for CNT synthesis with a very high yield (more than 5 kg/day) and to study the mechanisms of CNT formation. Therefore, the relevance and timeliness of the project are extremely beneficial from both scientific and technological points of view. The results of th e projects can help to promote the development and expansion of the CNT applications in Europe as well as in the rest of the world. The objectives of the research are to develop a novel method for single-walled and multiwalled CNT synthesis: with a high y ield production; for mechanistic investigations of CNT nucleation and growth; for electrical applications of individual and composite CNTs."
