3d multimedia support centre

Objective

The 3D Multimedia Support Centre (3DMSC) will provide information, training, consultancy and 3D datasets to European multimedia users and developers who wish to create and use 3D content in their multimedia applications. The aim of 3DMSC is to meet these objectives and build a profitable service company which will serve the European multimedia industry in this important area.

The creation and use of 3D content for multimedia applications is far more complex than the creation and use of sound, text, still images or video. However, technological developments in the areas of 3D data capture and manipulation mean that widespread use of 3D content is becoming practical. In addition, there is a rapidly rising demand for high quality 3D content in applications such as games, CD ROM titles, virtual museums, architecture, animation and virtual reality.

For these reasons multimedia support centres will prove a real benefit for the European multimedia industry. Such support centres focused on the creation and use of 3D multimedia content will:

- increase awareness of the availability and benefits of incorporating 3D content into multimedia applications.
- develop, demonstrate and document best practice for the creation and use of 3D content in multimedia publications.
- efficiently disseminate this best practice to multimedia developers throughout Europe.
- influence relevant emerging standards and legal frameworks for 3D multimedia content, to enable and stimulate rapid market growth.
- exploit the results of appropriate European development projects, particularly the ACTS project 119 - Virtual Museum.
3DMSC will combine the complimentary resources and expertise of two companies already focused completely on the creation and use of 3D data. These companies are 3D Scanners in London and Archimation in Berlin.

The two partners will develop the business by providing a high quality service from day one. They do not however expect 3DMSC to become profitable until year three, and do not expect to realise a return on their initial investment until year five. The ultimate project objective is to package the 3DMSC concept in such a way that it can be profitably reproduced throughout Europe and the world.
