Mheg support centre

Objective

The overall aim of this project is to implement and operate a MHEG development support and conformance testing centre for developers of multimedia systems and applications.
The result will be a MHEG Support Centre in full operation, offering:
- training services
- development support services
- certification services
These services will be focused on the MHEG standard and its integration in DAVIC-compliant systems. However, peripheral domains of interest to MHEG implementers, especially related to multimedia system architectures and standards, will also be addressed.

The followed approach will be:
- elaboration of a commercial agreement between all MSC parties, based on refined services definition - market analysis and business plan study, necessary for the right positioning of the service and a successful exploitation - definition and implementation of a marketing plan - identification of third parties able to provide missing expertise or tools to the MSC, possibly leading to commercial agreements establishment - identification and use of adequate distribution channels - selection and adaptation of existing MHEG development support tools, training materials and conformance's testing tools - specification and development of missing MHEG development support tools, training materials and conformance's testing tools - specification and development of the MHEG support centre infrastructure, including an on-line and/or a hot-line service access facilities (depending on the identified requirements) - provision of a feedback towards standardisation bodies

MHEG is an ISO/IEC and ITU standard for the interchange representation of multimedia/hypermedia information objects. Approved by ISO in 1995, MHEG currently receives very strong interest from most major actor in the interactive TV market, as its base profile has been selected by DAVIC as the standard for set-top-unit high-level API. This is the first, though major step towards the generalisation of MHEG to more complex and emerging multimedia application.

The MSC project is an opportunity to push the development of multimedia systems by the provision of a MHEG development support and testing environment for multimedia and hypermedia systems. The access to this environment will help the developers to implement multimedia applications, using the MHEG standard. This project will thus reinforce the capability of European equipment manufacturers and software vendors to position themselves on a fastly growing market by prompt development and commercialisation of standard-conforming products and applications.

The MHEG Support Centre, result of the MSC project is foreseen to be exploited, maintained and enriched, until the full integration of the MHEG standard in multimedia and hypermedia systems.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
