Integration Europe's Mobile ICT Community - Networking Innovation Activities, Entrepreneurs, Clusters and Leading Stakeholders in the Mobile Information and Communication Technology Sector

Objective

The mClusters project gets its distinctive qualities from its main objective: To benefit more from local innovation clusters, which are globally connected, while shaping better mobile Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The project brings together groups of advanced users of such information society technology with relevant experts from academia, industry and supporting institutions to foster the exchange of best practices for creating new applications and diffusing related knowledge.

The project should create synergies among regional as well as pan-European projects by strategic matchmaking and collaboration between investors, high-tech firms, and technology specialists at universities and other R&D centres. The mClusters project puts emphasis on the effectiveness in clustering of competencies regarding mobile ICT, especially technology that cuts across sectors through a variety of new, comprehensive, and user-oriented applications. The project builds on experiences gained through PAXIS projects, Gate2Growth activities and the Hubs & Regions consortium of 35 R&D centres across Europe, involving nearly 69 researchers in research and development work. In its ambition to link geographically anchored clusters across sectorial borders, the mClusters project should attain useful insights of success factors and weaknesses in the clustering of companies applying ICT in various sectors.

Eight European regions with significant clusters of special competencies are targeted for immediate action, including joint projects/programs among the clusters. For each of them, cross-cluster collaboration is perceived as a priority. Yet, in the project, the comparison and diffusion of success factors and best practices will go beyond these to include other existing and new clusters. Through this exchange of knowledge and experiences, the mCluster project also deals with governance among stakeholders, business alliances & innovative public-private partnerships, and with policy.
