Gate2Start, a ground-breaking model for the successful exploitation of research-based innovation; Bringing entrepreneurship and market expertise at the start of applied research

Objective

Within the Action Plan 'Innovation in Europe' several initiatives, infrastructures and services have been established to assist Innovation for Enterprises, Business Planning and Access to finance. However, only a small percentage of innovative research' based ideas have been able to become funded and to transform into market products. The proposed project believes that break through innovation is an iterative process and it starts at the initial stage of the market - oriented (applied) research. Thus, business aspects, market trends and funding possibilities must be taken into account from time of birth of research idea, rather than when the prototype is already developed. This is more applicable to the ICT sector where the evolution results as a combination of technical progress, legislative evolution, and the emergence of new markets. To validate and formulate the mechanism that will implement the aforementioned model the following workplan is proposed: a) Creation of a roadmap of the ICT sector in Europe including all major key players: researchers, start-ups and spin-outs, serial entrepreneurs, market experts, investors, etc b) organization of awareness seminars to educate researchers and future entrepreneurs on entrepreneurship and market issues, c) Provision of personal coaching to researchers and entrepreneurs d) Organisation of discussion groups and creation of local networks of key innovation actors e) elaboration of a business platform that will enable the interaction of the local networks and the transition of best practices, f) Broader Dissemination of the Gate2Start model via workshops and the creation of liaisons with other initiatives, especially Gate2Growth and PAXIS. The Gate2Start model will be validated by analyzing identifying the parameters that led to success and failure in specific cases. The project will result in specific policy suggestions that will aim to support the implementation of the model in European, National and Regional
