Logistices to support continuous improvement for SMES in the virtual enterprise

Objective

The principal objective of LOGSME is to provide information systems to integrate supply chain operations from sales through distribution, production and purchasing. The goal of this logistics system is to continuously monitor and improve performance across the supply chain by establishing control of the elements of the supply chain so as to optimise its cost effectiveness, performance and timeliness.

LOGSME will develop a number of major prototype elements including tools for planning and control, tools for linking solutions and legacy systems and communication tools to facilitate improvement for the SME who forms part of a virtual enterprise. In addition a number of manufacturing modules will be modified for a seamless toolset together with the major prototypes.

LOGSME will focus on developing low cost PC based tools which integrate to existing systems and tools. Market standard development tools and platforms will be adopted to ensure a wide market take up of the project results. LOGSME will make use of a rapid prototype development approach which will see early 'throw-away' prototypes developed to demonstrate initial concepts and presentation styles. The end user partners will participate in the definition of requirements through the evaluation of these prototypes which will replace 'paper designs' to a large extent.

The potential for LOGSME is high with particular impact on the food sector in the short term, but long term for the entire European SME community. With LOGSME, SMEs will be able to gain greater benefits from forging close ties to their suppliers and customers to form virtual enterprises, and by the sharing of information continually improve their response to market requirements.
