Expanding the Competitive Intelligence in the European Distributed Energy Resources Sector

Objective

SYNERGY PLUS is a Economic and Technological Intelligence Action for SMEs that want to enter the dynamics of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) markets, through RTD projects to be supported by FP7. Distributed Energy Resources means the local combined production and use of electricity and heat (for instance using Renewable Energy Sources), with the re injection of electrical energy into the distribution grid. A first set of economic and technological intelligence actions in that sector (ETI SYNERGY contract ETIS-CT-2004-508508) has already led to several lessons. First, SMEs are not lacking data. They lack knowledge which can be used to define development plans within market boundaries that are both regional and European. The "knowledge pill" concept delivered by www.synergy-project.org will be extended to describe the Research results coming from national and EU funded programs used by SMEs. Next, SMEs are puzzled by the apparent complexity of future DER markets. With the support of SME clusters and Energy Agencies, a two-days training workshop (coming from the FP6 integrated project EU-DEEP on DER) will be delivered to 720 SMEs in 6 Member States (Finland, France, Austria, Germany, Poland, Spain), describing the opportunities offered by DER. This will allow the selection of a short list of 200 development projects, based on a technology and business analysis performed by Research Centers (VTT, Labein, Arsenal Research, Lodz University, ISET). Thanks to a direct connection with the future Electricity Technology Platform, 150 SMEs will be introduced into the first calls for proposal of FP7, meaning in average 30 proposals which will be screened and improved by an Advisory Board of Utilities (led by GAZ de FRANCE), by investors (CAPITALIA and MERMAID) and by the Energy Agencies of the 6 Member States. A series of dissemination actions will be coordinated by the French Energy Agency ADEME to open the SYNERGY PLUS market place to SMEs of other member states.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
