Stepping up Economical and Technology Intelligence in Sport

Objective

Sport is an important factor because of social and health promotion and because of the growing economical aspects. In 1999 the employment in sports in Europe was near 800.000 has risen by 60% in the past ten years and is expected to reach nearly 2 million by 2010. It incorporates many industrial sectors and services and is a growing area for both the larger companies and SMEs. The sector is relative new and is generally regarded as an early adopting sector for new ideas and innovations.

INNOSPORT aims at the creation of a more innovation-friendly environment for the EU Sport industry, and to stimulate technological innovation and the setting up of innovative technology businesses. The following issues are tackled:
-Fragmentation of research (technology and human factors) and sector, insufficient targeting of research
-Limited research and innovative power
-Lack of a long term vision for innovation and insufficient new business creation
-Too much focus on National rather than European approaches in RandD.

Coordination of research will be performed trough the following activities:
-Set up a European platform as a basis for a competitive sports industry
-Investigate and test new approaches for innovation in sports, extract lessons from the experience of FP research projects and promote entrepreneurial innovation
-Offer services that need to be provided on a European scale
-Setting up an innovation roadmap based on sports needs, chances for companies and knowledge available to set an agenda and stimulate market driven RandD
-Promote a shift in the paradigms towards a knowledge based sector

The consortium has an optimal coverage and access to the stake holders needed for the success of the project, while remaining a manageable core project group. The consortium has been formed by carefully selecting experts and has an optimal access to the research and business activities in the EU.
