Objective
The proposed project aims to improve the predictive abilities and practical applicability and to extend the modeling framework of the Stand Density Management Diagrams (SDMD). The established SDMD for Scots pine plantations in Bulgaria will be re-evaluated employing methodological improvements, a disaggregation system for stand structure characterization will be developed and verification of the newly elaborated compound model will be performed. Another research objective is to examine the methodology of the SDMD with biomass data from natural broadleaved stands from north-western Spain in comparison with the Dynamic growth model by the host research team. The implementation of the research activities will be combined with a training program which will enhance the applicant’s qualification in the forest models research area by study of the methodology of the management-oriented whole-stand level model elaborated by the host team for even-aged stands. Another training objective is to broaden the professional background of the applicant by study of methodology for evaluation of the carbon sequestration capacity of the forest ecosystems. The co-operative research program will result in development of new-generation compound density control model combining whole-stand-level and distribution models and the comparative studies will provide assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of two types of whole-stand level models and their possibilities to complement each other in solving silvicultural problems. The competency of the applicant in the field of forest models will be extended and the applicant’s qualification to deal with complex studies on the terrestrial ecosystems will be broadened during the course of the research and training programs. The knowledge and the professional experience acquired and the established scientific contacts will increase the applicant’s competitiveness and will enhance her potential to reach professional maturity.
