Development of novel analytical method for complex determination of organic compounds in Aerosols Participating on global changes in atmosphere

Objective

Aerosol particles are ubiquitous and influence our life directly by inhalation, or indirectly by contribution to climate changes. Knowledge of organic content of the aerosol particles is crucial for specification of their source, and for monitoring of their fate. This proposal suggests novel approach for complex determination of organic species in aerosol particles.

The aerosol particles will be deposited by an impactor, a device for precise and selective aerosol collection. Extraction of the organic content from impactor membranes will be performed by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) modified specifically for this purpose. It offers an automated and environment-friendly alternative to traditional liquid extraction methods. The extract will be analysed b y 2-dimensional liquid chromatography (2-D LCxLC) with mass spectrometry (MS). An on-line connection between SFE and 2-D LCxLC will be developed and employed for the analysis of aerosol samples.

The comprehensive mode of 2-D LCxLC enables separation of complex mixture of components by employing two consequent columns with different stationary phases. Separation efficiency of such system abolishes the limits of conventional 1-column LC, and allows determination of wide range of components. This approach allows automated one-single-run determination of samples without the necessity of their manual pre-treatment. Further, no sample contamination or degradation affects the results in the closed on-line system.

The results of our determination will be correlated with meteorology data, and utilised in development of atmospheric models. The whole research forms a part of the multi-disciplinary research project studying interactions among biosphere, aerosols, clouds and climate.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
