Study of the true stress-strain diagramme of brittle materials during fracture by a bar bundle technique. Application to plain concrete with real size aggregate, 1992-1994

Objective

Measurement of the true energy absorption capability of the unit material volume during fracture of brittle materials (plain concrete). This data is fundamental for structural analysis of failure during service, earthquake, impact loading (see annexed report). The measurement will be performed using concrete with real size aggregate because the data from microconcrete are not transferable to real structures.

Progress to end 1991

Conceptual design of the uniaxial Hopkinson's bar bundle (see annexed report). Contacts with ENEL and ENEA which intend to apply this methodology to concrete with real size aggregate and fiber reinforced concrete.

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1992 (expected results)

Construction of the Hopkinson's bar bundle and verification of its performances. Installation of the bar bundle in the LDTF in order to measure the true stress-strain diagramme of concrete with real size aggregate (specimen of 20 x 20 x 20 cm) during fracture by crack propagation, at low, medium and high strain rate.

Short description of evolution of work in 1993

Continuation of the measurements in collaboration with ENEL and ENEA. Design of a biaxial version of the equipment in order to study the influence of loading direction.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
