Best practice for information technology in the textile industry

Objective

The objective of BIT is to stimulate the use of best practice techniques to aid SMEs in the textile industry to adopt and implement effectively advanced, integrated IT systems. The focus of the project will be the integration of various types of IT systems.

BIT covers all aspects of an SMEs business process from electronic commerce between trading partners to the integration of various aspects of the SMEs manufacturing processes.

The business objectives of BIT are to enhance the effects of system applications on an SMEs flexibility and competitiveness. This will be achieved by improved integration levels between various types of systems.

The consortium comprises textile SMEs in the UK, Denmark and Greece.

The approach will be as follows:
- to identify the detailed nature of the business requirements for the companies within the consortium
- to identify the IT systems which provide the best solutions to the requirements identified together with the resulting interaction requirements. During this stage, systems resulting from previous EU projects will be evaluated. These include ESPRIT projects EP5478, EP2277, EP5246 and the EUREKA FORCAST project, covering the areas of scheduling, EDI and integration. Since systems from normal commercial routes will also be evaluated, it will be possible to submit proposals to the EU aimed at increasing the commercial potential of EU projects. These recommendations may include areas such as the functionality of the systems and also support issues which may have an impact on the practical commercial take-up of such systems.
- assistance will then be given to help ensure that the most effective system is selected and implemented in accordance with the principles of Best Practice.
