Objective
Recent research from the Atlantic Coral Ecosystem Study (ACES) detailed over 1300 species from cold-water coral study sites along the EU continental margin. However, the biodiversity and vulnerability of these ecosystems remains unknown and this proposal aims to extend on the results of the 5th Framework ACES project by examining the extent to which cold-water coral reefs in northern Europe support a high biodiversity, and to assess the vulnerability of associated epifauna by building on existing and enhancing expertise between the fellow and the host institution at the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS).
There are three research objectives:
(1) to describe and quantify biodiversity of cold-water coral reef fauna from Darwin Mounds and Mingulay Reef,
(2) to compare biodiversity across depths, and
(3) to evaluate the vulnerability of cold-water coral reef epifauna to sedimentation.
The fellowship links the expertise of the fellow in epifaunal taxonomy, regeneration studies, and sedimentation impacts with complementary expertise provided by the host in taxonomy, in situ environmental monitoring, deep-water species cultivation, scientific diving, and cold-water coral research. The fellowship mutually benefits the fellow and the host as it creates and fosters long-term international collaborations while transferring vital taxonomic and technological knowledge between partners that reinforce the scientific excellence of the European Research Area.
Working in collaboration with a European research centre that has taken a central role in pan-European marine research initiatives will greatly contribute to the professional development and independence of the candidate. This period of mobility benefits both the fellow and the host as a cost-effective method for creating opportunities for joint efforts between international researchers that would otherwise remain geographically and scientifically fragmented, despite similar scientific mandates.
