Objective
We plan to study novel quantum phases and transitions induced by lattice disorder in realistic models of strongly correlated electrons and bosons, relevant to the physics of quantum antiferromagnets and of cold atoms in optical lattices.
Large-scale computational studies, based on Quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization, will be conducted on the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the site-diluted bilayer and on the site-diluted two-dimensional J1-J2 lattice, and on the Bose-Hubbard model on quasi-periodic and random lattices.
The main expected result of the project is the location and characterization of novel quantum-disordered phases in between the geometrically disordered phase due to absence of lattice percolation and the ordered phase on a percolated lattice. Different intermediate quantum phases, such as spin liquid, Bose glass and Mott glass phases, are expected.
The project will provide quantitative predictions useful for the observation of such phases in the magnetically doped bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnet BaCuSi2O6, in the magnetically doped frustrated J1-J2 antiferromagnet Li2VOSiO4, and in cold bosonic gases in random optical lattices realized through multi-chromatic laser beams or speckle lasers.
