An environment for real time community interactions

Objective

In MAYPOLE project, we propose to :

- learn more about information flows within a community, and identify potential communications applications
- explore ways in which new communication tools may facilitate real-time interactions among groups of people
- design and develop concepts for intuitive user interfaces that are embedded into everyday physical objects
- specify the technology infrastructure required to realise such environments
- assess how the environment may be adapted to the changing needs of community in a sustainable manner
- creatively communicate the lessons learned about the process to all key stake holders and
- ensure that the results find their way into commercial products through industrial uptake.

The deliverables for the project are reports of community studies, validated application scenarios, evaluated design concepts and test prototypes. The applications and user interface concepts in the project will be documented in a suitable form for industrial uptake.

We will adopt a user centred development process in which people from selected pilot communities based in Austria and Finland participate in the project. A number of competing product and user interface concepts will be visualised and evaluated before prototyping selected functionality for field trials. Team members work in parallel feeding continuously into each others processes through a project intranet. Continuous two-way communication is an essential element of MAYPOLE development strategy. We intend to use a variety of tools and activites to foster continuous interaction at three levels: intra-project communication; with the pilot community and with stakeholders.

MAYPOLE is based on the concept of connecting people, objects and places to perform a shared activity. Our goal is to explore, develop and validate application scenarios and product concepts of novel user interfaces for a communications environment that supports new kinds of interactions in a community. We focus on user interfaces for real-time information so that people can share every activities. Initially, we focus on a particular activity: parents sharing the task of taking children to school but the environment will be able to support other activities as well.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
