Objective
The objective of VIR-ENG is to develop highly integrated design, simulation and distributed control environments for building agile modular manufacturing machine systems which offer the inherent capacity to allow rapid response to product model changes and feature variants. This acknowledges the need to compete effectively within a customer-driven market. The project seeks to achieve rapid introduction of new machine systems; rapid reconfiguration of existing machine systems when new products/models are to be introduced or process changes to be made; simplified and proven retrofitting with minimum disruption to accommodate minor design changes in the product, and rapid product change-over for redefined feature/model variants.
The information infrastructure will be developed to facilitate a seamless integration between the machine system design environment and the control system design environment. Thus the code which is used to drive the simulation can be transferred/used in developing machine and application codes for the run-time operation of real machine systems. VIR-ENG adopts a distributed components-based paradigm for building machines and their control systems.
At the conclusion of this project, an integrated virtual development environment will be available to support interactive visualisation, modelling, simulation and off-line programming of modular manufacturing machine systems. An integrated suite of development tools will be available for the configuration, programming, monitoring and analysis of distributed control networks.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
