Objective
Electronic data exchange if a key element for European industry to remain competitive in a market which is expanding. One of the European strong points is the high quality of products, the customer orientation and the short production lead times. This is particularly relevant to the one-of-a-kind manufacturer in the construction industry. To increase this advantage the construction company , supplier, surveyor's offices and subcontractors need to exploit state-of-the-art information and communication technologies supporting integration throughout the entire construction process.
To achieve this goal, SUMMIT will create, implement, test and evaluate an EDI-based communication infrastructure between the various partners involved in the manufacturing process of construction and building. This infrastructure is to automate the ordering, delivery, invoicing and payment process of house systems, equipment and service in a supply chain, whose members are on different levels regarding implemented ICT. An inter-organisational information flow system, which links the various autonomous companies and traces the information flow across company is a necessary prerequisite to support enhanced co-ordination and the virtual enterprise.
The main results of SUMMIT are envisaged to be,
- A procurement process model exploiting the potential of pure digital data exchange and system inter operability
- EDIFACT message types for the procurement of house systems and equipment;
- A STEP product model (Application Protocol) enabling the representation of product data for house structures in selected areas;
- An EDI communication infrastructure featuring secure and compatible information exchange for the entire production process;
- A distributed information flow component based on the EDI communication infrastructure supporting process definition and process execution across the boundaries of autonomous organisations;
- Two prototype implementations of business chain scenarios in a real world environment with realistic test data among a prefab house manufacturer and its suppliers and subcontractors.
