Objective
The objective of ASSISTANT is to produce an intelligent Distributed Control System (DCS) fully integrating recent advanced in internet and multimedia technologies into novel decision-support facilities.
The main results that the project aims to achieve as successive incremental steps are,
- An 'open' and 'WEBised' interface to Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The interface will be built upon an Active-X based extension of the OLE for Process Control (OPC) classes, the Active-X for Process Control (XPC) classes. These XPC classes will be designed to be 100% CORBA and ORBIX compliant, and will be capable of transparently handling remote connections from SCADA or DCSs and plant devices (and vice versa) via intranet activities;
- 'Intelligent Agents for Process Control' (IA4PC) implementing advanced distributed control methods that can fully exploit the advantages allowed for by intranet technologies in continuous as well as discrete control processes;
- IA4PC implementing novel decision-support facilities that can fully exploit the advantages allowed for by intranet technologies to assist human operators in supervising industrial plants from local and remote workplaces;
- A networked and 'WEBised' MM interface for use as intelligent advisor to human operators in manufacturing and production processes;
- Three tested and validated project prototypes embedding the distributed control methods and the advanced decision support facilities within three different applications provided as project test-beds by the user partners;
- An assessment as to the impact of Intranet and MM technologies on the working practices and relationships of technical personnel in industrial environments as well as contributions to the definition of guidelines and standards for the development of IA4PC and 'WEBised' MM decision-support tools for use in production plants.
The results are proposed as an answer to pressing unsatisfied end users needs, based on the results of a detailed state-of-the-art analysis carried out by the project consortium.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
