Objective
SIT-MOON intends to provide the electronic publishing industry with a modular multimedia authoring environment suited to multimedia production for on-line (small and broad-band) and off-line (e.g. CD-ROM, DVD) delivery. The integration. of digital media archives into the authoring environment for storage, management and retrieval of multimedia content is a key issue in that project.
The business objectives are the propelling of multimedia production in European companies and the opening of new markets for potential multimedia content owners trough usage and exploitation of digital media archives. The system will support the creation, management and re-use of multimedia assets and applications. It will foster the creative process for content creators and publishers by providing authors with multimedia authoring tools along with multimedia assets for re-use It will shorten the production time while at the same time increase the quality of final published products.
SIT-MOON will concentrate on implementing a pilot authoring environment for electronic interactive publishing products by integrating existing methodologies, standards and technologies.
The electronic publishing domain is tremendously influenced by the recent convergence of telecommunication and multimedia technologies. A steadily changing technological environment makes it very hard for companies in the publishing sector to follow the latest developments while concentrating on the quality of the editorial content of their products. It is a clear need to provide these content-providers with effective tools to communicate the content to the consumers. Europe is expected to have a clear advantage over competitors in the content-provider field due to its rich cultural heritage. Still without accompanying measures to secure the effective exploitation of this content European companies will not be able to gain the advantage from their position.
The exploitation results will be the evaluated pilot authoring environment along with the pilot multimedia applications showing new business opportunities for multimedia content owners. Therefore the project will also include
- establishing and evaluation of quality criteria against both the production environment as well as the final multimedia publications
- support publishing on optical storage devices or network services while optimising the application according to the quality of service supported by the chosen medium
- propel multimedia authoring from one-time application design to re-use of multimedia assets trough interfaces to private and public digital media archives.
