Final Report Summary - MOMENTUM (Angular momentum transfer in galaxy formation and evolution)

We have quantified the transfer of angular momentum through radial migration of stars, in spiral galaxies like our own, by numerical simulations. We have also quantified how much of the orbital momentum remained in the merger remnants, after galaxy interactions, within the GALMER library (Theoretical Virtual Observatory http://galmer.obspm.fr(opens in new window)). Also we have studied in detail through observations and simulations the fueling and feedback of AGN.
We established that the increase in the star formation history at high redshift was due in a large part to the increased gas fraction, and in a smaller part to the star formation efficiency (SFE), and this for both the starburst and the main sequence galaxies. We also quantified the AGN feeding, showing it is rather intermittent, and demonstrated that the AGN feedback is significant, even for the low luminosity AGN (LLAGN), through important molecular outflows. Inflows were also observed in several cool core clusters, mapped with ALMA. We also made models of polar ring galaxies and derived their formation, through cosmic filament accretion, and galaxy interaction.
