M3A constructs a hybrid, hierarchical network consisting of GSM, Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) and very-high-speed wireless LAN (HIPERLAN) hot spots. The network provides a wide range of data rates (from 23 Mbps to 9.6 Kbps) over a wide range of distances (10's Km to 10's m). Both connection oriented (GSM) and connectionless (HIPERLAN) architectures are present as well as a broadcast element (DAB). GSM is used both as a low-speed data network and as a reverse path for data transmitted over the broadcast network. An extended version of Mobile IP provides the network layer protocol for M3A with smart routing decisions being taken at the Home Agent. Routes are updated dynamically and TCP packets transferred transparently (to the user) over the most suitable path. The M3A terminal is based in Linux with multiple PCMCIA network interface cards to give a usable, mobile terminal. Project URL : http://m3a.hiperlan.org
