Periodic Report Summary 2 - GREENET (Globally Recoverable and Eco-friendly E-equipment Network with Distributed Information Service Management)
The key objectives and the milestones of the project including, researcher exchanges and training, development of Service-Oriented Information System for WEEE, WEEE treatment strategies, Re-Manufacturing Policy and Decision making methods, have been achieved. The project was planned for three years initially, due to a number of incidents occurred in partner institutes, the project was given an extra year to carry out. The four year gives us more time to reflect and develop the planned models and systems. Within the lifetime of this project, a number of junior researchers have graduated or become an experienced researchers. Through the training and knowledge exchange, their research skills have been improved and the research outcomes have began to flourish.
Objective One is to establish an active international community and effective communication channel for research teams from various regions of the EU and China to collaborate in the research area of globally sustainable WEEE management. We have achieved the first objective, as we have 8 different educational institutes across EU and China from the deliverable which evidences the research exchanges among different partners that involve the experienced researchers and early career researchers. These partners with different expertise and experiences work together to deliver the project outcomes. Deliverables show the list of deliverables that have been completed and submitted which also show the result of team work among partners.
Objective Two is to integrate the complementary expertise of the European and Chinese teams to devise ICT-based strategies, solutions and standards to address the multi-faceted requirements of globally sustainable WEEE management. The objective two have been achieved through our proposed new re-manufacturing and disassemble optimization framework and approaches. A new service-oriented EEE information management is also proposed. The project produces an AI based manufacturing and re-manufacturing algorithms to consider different factors such as cost, operation difficulty, materials and processes etc to find the optimized solutions for the decision makers. Deliverable 2.3 3.3 and 4.3 have detailed reports on these proposed methods and approaches and their usefulness.
Objective three is to leverage the geographical characteristics of the teams for research evaluation, improvement and dissemination. The objective three is achieved in M45 and M46 through Deliverable 2.3 3.3 and 4.3 that have been reported on the proposed method or framework have been designed and implemented. It also states the required components and modules with procedures to process the inputs and generate the outputs. Deliverable D2.5 D3.5 and D4.5 report the new standards have been proposed and recommended. These include Smart WEEE remanufacturing service: Design and deployment in the GREENet architecture for global applications; Remanufacturing strategies and technical solutions for global WEEE sustainability implementation, GREENet architecture: distributed information service framework for national, regional and global WEEE information management
The D1.3 (M48) also describes two events having been organized for industry and local government to make them aware of WEEE. University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, 22, January, 2015 and Fudan University, Shanghai, China, 4, April, 2015. The events have more 200 delegates from industry and public sectors to share the outcomes of GREENet. More details about the programs can be found in the deliverables. In the life time of the project, we also organise a number of dissemination events in China and EU. THU also run a workshop in Beijing by inviting government official in recycling and industry delegate in waste management to participate the workshop and gave us talks and exchange their practices with us. The detailed programs and activities can be found in D4.2. In addition, the Environment Secretary of Scotland, Richard Lochhead also attended the workshop and meeting in Scotland. Moreover, Scotland also invested 1.3 million pounds in re-manufacturing by setting up a research institute. This demonstrates GREENet has produced impact on the decision-maker.
