A Working Group to develop a consensus on the optimum standard (scope, content and boundaries) for the next generation still image compression algorithm - JPEG 2000 - which will best serve the short, medium and longer term interests of the European economy. EUROSTILL partners' interests show involvement in all aspects of the next generation still image coder. The advantages of this are clear in that the Working Group has at hand a unique knowledge of the totality of the JPEG2000 system. The common target is very clear - to contribute towards the selection of the best possible architecture and algorithms to meet the requirements of JPEG2000. The recognised European strong points and special areas of interest are: Wireless/mobile aspects of JPEG2000 Architecture and requirements Issues of obtaining an open standard ensuring backwards compatibility Consideration of the Internet environment. A common EUROSTILL position has been identified as: - Promoting the partners input in JEPG2000 - Promoting JPEG2000 as a feature rich, high quality implementable standard - Working towards an open, harmonised standard suiting users needs for fast take up on the market.
