Objective "Quantum information science is a relatively young scientific discipline. However, the concepts and tools initially developed within this rapidly expanding field for the implementation of quantum computation have turned out very useful to provide both new physical insight and novel computational techniques relevant to different disciplines of physics. In this research project, we will extend these concepts and tools to the study of complex many-body systems, including condensed matter systems and chemical/biological complexes, from the perspective of identifying processes exhibiting quantum speedup and entanglement-based enhancement. We will investigate the relations between entanglement and the speedup of a quantum computation in condensed matter systems. Our aim is to characterize the possible functional role of coherence and entanglement for quantum enhancement in certain chemical/biological processes."
