"Design, analysis and applications of novel information processing paradigms for multimedia transmission in next generation wireless networks"

Final Report Summary - MMCODESTREAM (Design, analysis and applications of novel information processing paradigms for multimedia transmission in next generation wireless networks)

MMCODESTREAM succeeded beyond expectations in its two main goals: i) seamless integration of former Marie Curie IEF fellow into his home institution in terms of continuing high-intensity research production, and ii) maintenance or extension of fellow’s international research collaboration during the integration period and his international visibility through presence at major international conferences and research funding initiatives.

The first goal has been achieved under extensive publishing record: the fellow has co-authored 13 papers in leading international journals (mostly IEEE) and 17 papers presented at major international conferences (mostly IEEE) during the course of the project. The fellow’s research advanced the state-of-the-art in areas of both theoretical significance (such as unequal error protection schemes for reliable multimedia delivery) as well as practical significance (such as design and analysis of multimedia delivery services over fourth generation cellular networks: LTE/LTE-A). In addition, novel research areas are initiated beyond what has been initially suggested in the project proposal (such as coded random access protocols in wireless networks).

The second goal has been achieved by a large number of networking activities, mainly through focused research visits and conference attendances performed by the fellow in the last three years. These visits increased the fellow’s international visibility and profile and enhanced and enlarged his network of collaborators (the fellow has co-authored papers with more than 30 researchers worldwide). As an example, the fellow has been involved in 5 invited papers presented within special sessions at major international conferences. Mutual visits and collaborations affected not only the research, but also, the funding opportunities of fellow to establish his own research group: fellow has been involved in preparation of several EU FP7 and H2020 project proposals within strong network of international research and industrial partners. The highlight of this effort is successful application for FP7 Marie Curie ITN project ADVANTAGE that recently started and will continue over the following 4 years.

During the period of reintegration, the fellow has established himself as independent researcher with his own research group. He is currently supervising two PhD students and co-supervising additional two PhD students (all funded by national sources and University funding), with two more PhD students to be engaged within the EU funded FP7 ADVANTAGE project. One of his PhD students graduated (now postdoc at Aalborg University) and another is set to graduate soon marking the beginning of his production of high-quality research individuals. He is teaching one master-level course and two PhD level courses at the University of Novi Sad (UNS), which is a major knowledge-transfer activity targeting research-oriented students capable of being quickly introduced to state-of-the-art research. For his strong research achievements and funding results, before the end of his reintegration period, the fellow has been promoted to Associate Professor at UNS and in addition, elected as a Vice-President of Serbian IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) chapter.
