TRUSTED MULTI APPLICATION RECEIVER FOR TRUCKS

Objective

The overall objective of the TACOT project is to prepare the introduction and promote the use of EGNOS and GALILEO in the road transportation industry through the addition of a secure GNSS function to the Digital Tachographs (DT) which should equip more than 30 million European vehicles in the near future.
There is today a clear market interest, as adding the Position, Velocity and Time (PVT) function into the tachographs will allow these devices to be considered as open vehicle platforms serving a variety of ITS applications/services, and will unlock new market opportunities for tachometer manufacturers.
TACOT will allow a rapid penetration of EGNOS into the road transport sector, hence allowing EGNOS (then Galileo) to become the basis for many other applications in particular through the potential propagation to other road vehicles.
In terms of measurable objectives TACOT will:
• Design a secure GNSS function that can be implemented in the DT and supply trusted PVT information,
• Implement it in a DT
• Define a protection profile for the secure GNSS at the same level as the DT
• Draft an extended DT interface specification,
• Interface the extended DT to a 3rd party ITS application, to validate these concepts
• Propose to standardisation bodies the secure GNSS protection profile and the extended DT interface specification
• Propose a basis for an evolution of the EU regulatory framework about DT.
To fulfil these objectives, The TACOT consortium is composed of 12 partners:
- Actia, Continental, intellic & Stoneridge (tachograph manufacturers)
- FDC, Probayes & Keynectis (design of the trusted PVT)
- CertSign (trusted 3rd party)
- Actia Italia (supplier of FMS solutions)
- CORTE representing National Authorities
- G&P a law firm specialised in the DT domain
- SQUARIS a consulting firm specialised in EU legislation
The TACOT project will last 24 months.
