China's realities from a frontier research perspective

Objective

Pursuing mutually advantageous agreements with China has long been a priority for the European Community. The emphasis placed on China has resulted in the Chinese research community becoming increasingly involved in FP activities, which has developed greater collaborations between the two research communities on basic research. There is now an opportunity to take this cooperation to a new level. There is a strong interest within the Commission to support what is considered "frontier research".

The proposed project addresses this interest through conducting activities designed to research China's S&T realities as they pertain to the frontiers of research. In order to meet the project's challenging objectives, several specific activities will be implemented, which include Europe and China based workshops, a survey of relevant Chinese stakeholders, and a project dissemination seminar.

The project activities are structured to build the interest from specific members of the Chinese community active in, or potentially active in frontier research. The project activities will establish a network of Chinese stakeholders specifically relevant to the development and support of frontier research collaborations. The network of Chinese stakeholders, as well as European representatives active in frontier research and/or Chinese research collaborations, will provide critical knowledge and input to a strategic path forward document.

The strategic path forward will have specific relevance to the NEST programme and future Commission initiatives to be established within FP7. The strategic path forward will propose a means of leveraging the Chinese and European research policies, programmes, networks, and infrastructure to increase frontier research collaborations in an ongoing manner.

The project results will be publicly available through the project website.

The results will also be disseminated through established networks and a project seminar.
