Young stellar objects, their surroundings and jets: advanced observational and MHD studies

Objective

The project is focused on the physics of young stellar objects (YSOs), on the early evolution of the stellar coronae and on their interaction with the circumstellar environment. This field is a rapidly progressing and very promising one thanks to the top quality data collected with the last generation space observatories. The scope of the project includes determining the physical conditions in protostellar environments, and the characteristics of protostellar jets, how they connect with the jet evolution, ionization and emission, and how the jets interact with other protostellar components (circumstellar environment, disk, protoplanets, etc.) through radiation and/or mechanical impact.YSOs are very complex systems, where many components play important roles and interact with each other. The magnetic field is believed to play a central role in funneling the dynamics and energy transport of the ionized gas surrounding YSOs and, therefore, it must be included in any relevant modeling. The project requires expertise over a wide range of different fields and a multi-disciplinary approach. The research methodology will combine observations and data analysis with numerical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling of astrophysical plasmas. This gives birth to a multi-disciplinary project using observational astrophysics, mathematical modeling and high performance computing. Support from researchers with experience in the physics of YSOs and protostellar jets from both the modeling and the observational point of view is necessary to develop the appropriate know-how at INAF/OAPa. Two fellowships will be activated in the following research areas: 1) physics of YSOs and protostellar jets, with expertise on data analysis and emission processes in the optical and/or infrared and/or radio bands; 2) MHD of the astrophysical plasmas aimed at modeling jets, disks and the ambient medium surrounding YSOs and its interaction with the central star and with the protostellar jets.
