Objective
This project aims at building a world-class research capability at the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway for molecular studies on the interactions that take place between the human host and gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens. NUI, Galway is located in the Borders, Midlands and Western (BMW) region, which is a less favoured region of the EU. At present 5 research groups within the Department of Microbiology are focussed on research into several important human GI pathogens, and together these groups comprise the Human Pathogen (HP) Cluster.
Significant expertise exists within the HP Cluster in working with these pathogenic bacteria. However the HP cluster has identified a deficit of methodological knowledge in the area of advanced techniques for the study of host-pathogen interactions. The specific knowledge transfer that will be facilitated by this project will be in two main areas; methodologies for the study of cell signalling events and post-genomic technologies for the study of gene expression within the GI tract. Infections by GI pathogens are a major cause of human suffering and death, both in Europe and throughout the world.
Understanding the molecular interactions that take place between host and pathogen will be central to any long-term strategy for combating the diseases caused by these GI pathogens. The proposed transfer of knowledge will be achieved in a 48 month project, firstly, by seconding 2 existing personnel from the HP Cluster to 2 world-class partner institutions, and secondly, by recruiting 5 Experienced (ER) and 2 More Experienced (MER) researchers.
Outgoing personnel will return to NUI, Galway with an excellent knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques for host-pathogen research, as well as invaluable contacts at the partner institutions. The recruited researchers will work on a research programme at NUI, Galway that is designed by the HP Cluster to maximise the transfer of relevant knowledge to the host institution and its personnel.
