Objective
COSINES aims at transferring knowledge in the inter-disciplinary area of colloid science. This will be achieved through implementation of a specific research topic relating to the investigation of non-ergodic states in colloidal systems (glasses and gels), both in quiescent conditions and under stress.
This represents one of the foremost challenges in soft matter science and is manifested in several practical applications such as production and time stability of consumer products, as well as the function of biological systems. In this context we seek an understanding of the rheology of such frustrated states and their relation to the microscopic dynamics and ageing. For this reason we propose to study model systems with varying interparticle interactions from hard sphere colloids to ultrasoft core-shell or microgel particles and explore their role in the non-ergodicity transition and the mechanics.
To reach its goal, COSINES will use a combination of experimental techniques available at the Host Institution and develop novel ones. A crucial element of this methodology is the interpretation of the experimental findings that will involve a synergism with theory and computer simulations. The key to the successful completion of the proposed transfer of knowledge in COSINES is the collaboration with the identified leading experts from European groups in all-relevant aspects of research and training.
Therefore, several exchange visits for joint research and tutorial lectures throughout this project are envisaged. COSINES aspires at establishing the Host Institution as a European Center of Excellence in Colloid and Soft Matter Research that will provide both academic and applied services in the entire region of southeast Europe. Thus, COSINES will promote integration and competitiveness, while at the same time it will open the route for further transfer of knowledge to new and/or Associated EU Member States.
