European Information Project Involving Demographic and Economic Statistics

Objective

The ultimate aim of EURIPIDES is to provide a conveniently accessed source of demographic and economic statistics for small administrative areas across Europe. The area l level is known in the Community classification as LOC2 (Communes, gemeenten, wards, etc) and there are some 90,000 of these areas in Member States. Associated with these named areas will be a gazetteer and a set of digital boundaries.

This data would be issued on CD-ROM with GIS software, and analysis of the associated data would be subject to user controlled manipulation. Users will also be able to add their own data to the database and include this in the GIS analysis.

Multi-lingual text will be supported.

The production version would carry between 100 and 200 variables which would include those most commonly held in the European Community. These will be adjusted to a set of defined standards for each variable (e.g. age ranges), where possible, but the system will permit national differences.

After prototyping in the Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom, the production version would cover a broad range of European states and would develop a new market in LFRs.

Early indications are that this service would be of great use to market analysts in the private sector, public authorities making international comparisons and academic researchers.
