Regenerable high efficiency filtering media for arsenic treatment in drinking water.

Objective

The aim of REGENERA is to implement a production system of high-performing and re-generable filtering media that will be suitable to treat arsenic-contaminated drinking water and to be applied in water treatment plants.
During the project, it will be realized:
- A production plant for the iron oxy-hydroxide filtering mass;
- A manufacturing process and a plant characterized by high efficiency and low environmental impact for the regeneration of arsenic-saturated oxy-hydroxides of iron;
- A quick predicting system of the performance in the field of the arsenic removal system.
The main benefits arising from REGENERA project relate to two distinctive aspects of the produced filtering media, namely: its re-generability, that will allow a drastic reduction in the amount of the waste produced; and its high-level performance (it absorbs twice the amount absorbed by other products on the market), that, for the same characteristics of the water to be treated, will reduce the amount of filtering media to be used.
The environmental and economic benefits can be summarized by the following data:
- Minimization of waste production (of about 97% compared to traditional methods): about 67 tons at the end of the project and 65.430 tons two years after;
- Waste prevention: about 68 tons after the project and 65.528 tons two years after;
- Reuse of waste/substance recovery: about 67 tons at the end of the project and 65.430 tons two years after;
- Reduction of water consumption: about 140.000 l at the end of the project and 13.440.000 l two years after;
- Reduction of reagents consumption (FeCl3): about 42 tons at the end of the project and 2.688 tons two years after.
Finally, because the regeneration process will provide a very rich in arsenic residue, it will be possible, after appropriate treatments not covered by this work, also to make arsenic available as raw material for electronic industry, photovoltaic panels producers or for medical research.
