Advanced Bonding Technologies for Aircraft Structures

Objective

ABiTAS addresses at a fundamental advancement on structural adhesive bonding of small (e.g. fittings) and high aspect ratio areas (e.g. stringer to skin) with paste adhesives for aerospace applications. Research and development on adhesive chemistry (bonding on command), automated surface pre-treatment for Titanium and carbon fibre reinforced plastic adherents, on-line monitoring of the physico-chemical estate of the treated surface and advanced application & assembly technology shall lead to more robust, flexible and economic processing to alter the possibility for new structural concepts based on adhesive bonding and Ti-CFRP-composites. So ABiTAS targets directly at the research area 1.3.1.1.b ?Strengthening Competitiveness / Manufacturing, focussing its main objectives 1 and 2 (reduction of costs for aircraft development and aircraft operation by 20% in short term and 50% in long term). ABiTAS follows a triple-way approach to achieve the project targets: 1. Automated pre-treatment and on-line monitoring of surfaces 2. Adhesive chemistry 3. Automated application and assembly Surface pre-treatments for Ti and CFRP will be developed which show better compatibility with an automated industrial environment compared to the state of the art. A system will be developed for online-monitoring of the physico-chemical estate of the treated surface as a new instrument for more effective quality control. The aim of the second approach is to develop structural paste adhesives, which are less dependent from processing restrictions by bonding on command functionality and higher inherence towards environmental interferences (temp., humidity, contami-nation). Third advancements on fit-analysis and gap adapted application shall speed up the process, overcome today's restrictions in tolerances of bond-line thickness and alter process reliability. Development of fast fixation of components throughout the adhe-sive will be performed to lower

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
