Flame-retardant coatings based on nano-magnesium hydroxide, huntite and hydromagnesite for wood applications

Objective

The concept of the present project WOOD-FLARETCOAT is to solve the problem of producing improved flame retardant coatings for wood products, through the development of non-halogenated flame retardant systems based on inorganic flame retardant nanofillers (nano magnesium hydroxide, huntite and hydromagnesite) functionalised with ROs and incorporated into several water born polymeric matrix, to constitute composites. Based on that idea different coating formulations will be developed for wood materials for construction (both new buildings and restoration processes) and furniture, showing not only the target flame-retardancy but also some more additional properties, such as antibacterial activity, enhanced scratch resistance or photocatalytic effect.
Thus briefly, the flame retardant composites concerned will comprise mainly inorganic fillers (NMH, huntite and hydromagnesite), ROs and water born resins as matrices, for wood substrates applications. The composites will provide the advantage that inorganic fillers and ROs act in an only synergistic system as the coupling between them is developed by means of covalent unions. This synergistic cooperation will lead to potenciate the flame retardant effect as well as to correctly distribute the fillers into the matrix, nanometric fillers being expected to show stronger effects. Furthermore, metal nano-oxides such as ZnO, SiO2, ZrO2 and TiO2 will be incorporated into the coatings formulations in order to supply antibacterial and photocatalytic activity and enhance scratch resistance.
Another important additional advantage of the flame retardant coatings formulations must be pointed out. The use of nanofillers will probably allow the reduction of the total amount of flame retardant agent required in the final product without lowering the flame resistance of the material. The reduction of active components in the formulation will drastically decrease the cost of the final products.
