Final Report Summary - INTEGRIM (Integration and international migration: pathways and integration policies)
The Integration and International Migration: Pathways and Integration Policies INTEGRIM programme aimed to structure the existing high-quality research capacity on migration and integration policies and processes in Europe through the recruitment of 23 ESRs. The INTEGRIM network gathered 8 full partner academic institutions; University of Deusto (UDEUSTO), Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM), Sussex Centre for Migration Research (SCMR), Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Territorio (IGOT), Institutue for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES), Migration Research Centre, Koç University (MiReKoc), Central European University -Közép-európai Egyetem (CEU) and Migrations internatinales, espaces et sociétés-UNIV-POITIERS (MIGRINTER) and 6 non-academic associatedpartners from the private and public sector, civil society and international organisations (GIZATEA’s; The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) ; Bilbao City Council; TheLuso-American Development Foundation (FLAD); Ellacuria Fundazioa; and International Organization for Migration Turkey) with outstanding research and training credentials on migration and integration issues.
Since the beginning of the project in January 2013 and through three recruitment calls (2013, 2014 and 2015) INTEGRIM has enrolled 23 ESR from all over the world. By fostering the mobility of early stage researchers between European countries and to Europe from outside and promoting career development for researchers, academics and practitioners, the INTEGRIM project has contributed to the creation of an international trans-disciplinary critical mass of people specialized capacity on Migration and Integration policies and processes in the European Union and neighbouring countries. With regard to the recruitment strategy, which has been based on the excellence of the application, the Consortium has always proceed bearing in mind the purpose of guarantying equal opportunities, including gender balance, and open competition. During the first recruitment 50% of the recruited researchers were women, and 50% men. In the second call, instead, 6 researchers were women and only 2 were men, and in the final recruitment call, only one of the 7 selected candidates was masculine. This unbalance can be explained by the research area feminization, were most of ESRs are women. Women’s participation not only in research but within the evaluation, consultation and implementation processes has built into this project. An equitable balance between men and women has been insured at the level of expertise, and also in the numbers of men and women involved in helping students at an academic and tutorial level. The gender issue has been transversal in all courses, seminars, conferences and projects and several universities connected with this proposal explicitly deal with gender issues in courses connected.
The workshops, conferences and training opportunities organised by the network have boosted the researchers’ career in important ways. Through these experiences, the researchers have been able to contact and establish stimulating and lasting collaborations with some of the most important researchers in the field. Researchers have been able to develop the skills needed for a successful research career, including publishing and presenting their research results, organizing academic events, applying for research funds and establishing new research networks. Besides, the INTEGRIM project has provided young professionals with the capacity of bringing the knowledge gained into European policy and civil society realms. These skills increase the European decision-making capabilities regarding successful migration management responses and Europe’s role as a global actor. INTEGRIM has developed a full and varied training programme assembled around three type of training events: Scientific Thematic Workshops(STW), Scientific Meetings(SM) and Annual Conferences (AC). As stated in the GA, each WP leader has developed 3 STM (12 in total) and 12 SMs have been conducted linked to 3 ACs (Amsterdam, Budapest and Istambul) plus a final 3 days Final Conference (FC) in Deusto. In addition to planned training activities, INTEGRIM has developed many different additional activities such as film school (in collaboration with ....ITN in Budapest), Summer schools (MireKoç), colloques (MIGRINTER), photo exhibits (DEUSTO and MireKoç), and additional workshops with stakeholders (IGOT).
INTEGRIM programme has made an innovative contribution to academic knowledge on the concept of integration as a key factor for the future cohesion of European societies through a vast academic production with more than 40 scientific articles (25 peer reviewed, 14 of them indexed and 5 ISIs), two collective publications (WP1: "The Age of Human Rights " Special Issue 2016; WP2 : “The Management of Immigration Related Cultural Diversity in Federal Countries” 2015), a joint editted publication (Managing Regimes of Dis-Integration); 17 book chapters and over 200 presentations in academic conferences and whorkshops. Besides 7 PhD dissertations have been already presented, 11 more will be finalized by the end of 2017 and 5 by 2018.
