Objective
The target of this specific support action (SSA) is to prepare an ERA-NET proposal on the area of materials science and technology called "ERA-NET Materials". With this "ERA-NET Materials" project the bases for durable European partnerships in RTD planning and collaboration on materials science and technology will be strengthened. Also, systematic working methodologies from general science and technology policy to practical operations will be developed. As a result, regional and national programmes in member countries and regions will be gradually opened. This "ERA-NET Materials" activity will effect in the long run on the general impacts on the policy making behaviour of the participant countries and regions. The general knowledge on materials RTD based both on materials science and materials technology can be gathered more easily through common and generic RTD actions from the network. With the active networks the key players and the level of materials RTD activities in each country can be easily established. Also, the networking activities will help to identify those materials RTD areas in which each country should invest nationally. Based on that, the national materials RTD activities can concentrate on the most essential themes or actions which will be chosen according to the national needs. Closer collaboration of national and regional actors operating in materials science and materials technology will also increase the industrial utilisation of knowledge in Europe. This specific support action will be started by key policy making organisations from potential small European countries creating at the first stage a critical mass for the action. During this action the group will be enlarged to include also the main policy makers from some larger countries according to their needs. As a result, the strengthened consortium will prepare a proposal for ERA-NET Concerted Action with a detailed work programme and clarified focus.
