Weaving the humanities into the web and the web into the humanities. Preserving the cultural heritage of Yemen by creating a universally accessible virtual library of manuscripts

Objective

The innovative potential of this Proof of Concept project is to demonstrate that humanistic sciences can be productively coupled with sound business strategies to advance societal benefits and cultural sustainability. The grant will be used to get into contact and contract with potential joint venture partners with the overall goal to weave the humanities into the web and the web into the humanities. The ground-breaking long-term result of the project would be a universal online digital manuscript library addressing four urgent matters at once: First, to secure the unique cultural heritage of Yemen in danger of being lost forever. Second, to re-unite what has been spread all over the world, thus making accessible, for the first time ever, all the Yemeni sources as a unified whole for both Western and Arab scientists. Third, to put emphasis on the strong rationalist epistemology that continues within Islamic thought until today. Fourth, to enhance awareness for the major effort that will have to be completed in the long run to restore and preserve the ancient manuscripts as physical objects.
