MOTORCYCLE SAFETY HELMETS

Objective

To establish the distribution and severity of injuries experienced by motorcyclists, with particular reference to those of the head and neck.
To establish the most significant injuries and injury mechanisms.
To establish the tolerance of the human head, brain and neck to those injuries and injury mechanisms.
To propose a specification for testing motorcycle helmets.

Current status
At the time of writing, the Action has been underway for approximately 18 months. Extensive work has been done on the COST 327 Literature Review and the document was finalised in late 1996 ; it will be available in hard copy form and on the Internet (COST Transport - CORDIS) in early 1997. The following work packages have already been worked on extensively, with the Investigation of Headforms work package having already generated an interim report and being due to complete its final report in mid-1997 :
accident Data Collection and Analysis Project ;
investigation of Headforms ;
reconstruction of Helmet Impact and Damage ;
development of a Mathematical Model ;
establishment of Head Tolerances ;
development of Test Procedures.

A number of interim input documents have been created for several of the ongoing work packages. The Action has a mandate until 1999, and is progressing well and according to the four-year program.
Work planned
As stated previously, the Action has a mandate until 1997, but certain work packages are due for completion in the near future. The Investigation of Headforms is due for completion in mid-1997. The Accident Data Collection project will be completed and will report in late 1997, but the task has been extended to include an analysis sub-task and this will be the subject of further work during late 1997 and early 1998. The Reconstruction, Modelling and Head Tolerance Tasks will conclude their programmes in parallel in early 1998 and the Test Procedures Development work will be finalised in 1999, as will the final reporting and technical evaluation exercises. The Impact Evaluation is likely to be carried out during 2001.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
