Objective
"The aim of this project is to advance the state of the art in the innovative field of airborne wind energy, by producing new results and advanced solutions for challenging aspects of this technology, like the robust and optimal automatic operation of the system, the design of the tethered wing, and the efficient conversion of the generated power. These advancements will be extensively tested through experimental activities. At the same time, this research project will bring forth theoretical advancements in the field of control engineering, by investigating a series of innovative control design techniques able to deal with complex, time-varying systems subject to stochastic uncertainty and disturbances and operational constraints. These topics are highly timely and relevant, since high-altitude wind is a vast, still unexplored source of renewable energy with the potentials to supply the global energy demand at lower costs than fossil fuels, and airborne wind energy technologies are being developed to harness such a promising source. Moreover, in addition to airborne wind energy, the novel methodologies developed in this project will be relevant for many challenging modern applications and technologies, like offshore wind energy and smart grids. The objectives of this project will be pursued by the fellow through a structured two-years long research program taking place at the Automatic Control Laboratory of ETH Zurich, one of the world’s best research groups in the field. The research program will produce a quantum leap in the career development of the young fellow researcher, providing him with the scientific and technical knowledge, the complementary skills and experience, the contact-network and technology transfer competencies needed to attain a leading independent position in the involved research topics and establish long-term, high-quality research and development activities within the European Research Area."
