Wales Innovation Relay Centre

Objectif

Wales has a population of 2,903,085. As a region it lags behind the UK and the EU in economic development and with over half of Wales an Objective 1 area, Wales is an "innovation and TTT less favoured region", which increases the need for support actions such as an IRC. In this project it is the aim of the WIRC to cut the apathy to technology in many Welsh companies, mainly SMEs, and to stimulate them to innovate new products and processes using technologies sourced from Europe. Equally, WIRC will encourage and guide Welsh researchers to commercialise their IPR to the markets of Europe. WIRC will promote the results of European funded R&D from previous Framework Programmes and from other initiatives such as EUREKA and LIFE-Environment. Welsh clients will receive information and guidance on other EU-funded and national business support initiatives in order to better prepare themselves to innovate. WIRC and its key staff started operations in 1993 and by an ongoing programme of visits, now has an unrivalled knowledge of Welsh companies and research teams. It is also the aim of the WIRC to aid in the strengthening of the IRC network via the exchange of best practice, collaboration with other members of the network in Thematic Groups, brokerage events and company missions and improvement of staff skills through training. The results of this project will be 40 to 50 TTTs, 250 negotiations started, 1400 companies not previously using technology as a tool for growth receiving technology offers on a regular basis, 200 new companies involved in the TTT process due to extended support, 1000 signpostings to other services, presentation of 5 WIRC best practices, Welsh participation at 20 brokerage events organised by the Thematic Groups, 100 companies/researchers to attend European brokerage events, 100 companies/researchers to be represented by Case Officers at European brokerage events.
